So recently my doll Dasia turned 18 years old and I had a customer purchase the birthday box which included autographed copies of my books What's Your Big Idea, Dasia: The Story Of A Big Beautiful Doll and the Dasia birthday doll. So this particular customer was in the UK. I packed the doll and books in this really nice box and then put it in a shipping box and went to UPS to ship. Now to put this in prospective the box weighed about 5 pounds. So what a shock I got when I got t0 the counter and the guy told me it would cost me $211 to ship this little 5 pound box to the UK. I thought he had made a mistake, so I said excuse me. Did you say $211 and he said yes, because we guarantee the box from our truck to the customer door. I thought to myself oh Lord, this lady has been waiting for her doll and books now I have to tell her that the $20 I charged her for shipping is $191 short. The whole birthday box including shipping was only $197. Well I wasn't going to pay $211, so I went on over the United States Postal Office and put the birthday box in a shipping box got to the counter and the clerk said $32. Whooo what a load off my shoulders. I was so happy to hear that. That was a long way from $211. So I paid my $32 and asked the clerk did this include tracking and she said yes, so needless to say I was so happy that I could now get my customer her doll and books. Sounds great right? Well I got another shock the next day when I went online with my tracking number to check to see where the birthday box was. To my unhappy surprise the USPS does not track international packages. I thought to myself, this must be a mistake, because I asked the clerk did this include tracking and she said yes. Well it did not include tracking and here I was again right back where I started with all of this weight on my shoulders, because now I had shipped the package and had no way of knowing if the customer would receive it. I just had to wait and pray that she would email me and say I got my doll. Thank God that's exactly what happened. Wendy got her birthday box and she loved it and I was so happy.
The moral of this story is to make sure if you are shipping something out of the country you understand the shipping procedure of what's covered and what's not covered. Trust me you will have a lot less stress.
I hope this helped.
